Recorded performances

Recorded performances are significant to the study of music. Music Library has extensive audio-visual collections on Chinese music which are included in the HKU Library catalog. Besides, recorded sound collections can also be explored through subscribed electronic databases, like Naxos Music Library and Music Online: Contemporary World Music. These databases offer streaming access to recorded performances.

Naxos Music Library features well-known pieces of Chinese music, e.g. Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto. You can also find recorded performances of Chinese opera and traditional Chinese musical instruments. Record labels are Naxos and Marco Polo.

Music Online: Contemporary World Music contains a wide range of genres. You can look for “China” under Browse Places, where contains traditional Chinese music and Chinese minority music, like Tibet.

This open source has all kinds of genres on Chinese music. You can search二胡, 古琴, or Chinese opera. See if you’d find some historical recorded performances.
